Evolution of Modern Music Concerts

The evolution of modern concerts has been developed by technological developments, growing fan bases, and more disposable income. The idea of concerts started in 1678 that had classical music then changed into blues and jazz. However modern concerts came into being in the 1960s, and were fueled by the birth of rock and roll. Musicians became celebrities who could demand live shows for their numerous fans. Ideal sound for massive areas, advanced ticketing and assigned seating developed in this area. For instance, the first stadium concert was performed in 1965 by the Beatles. In August 1969, Woodstock took place, inventing the modern music festival and creating a new audience for concerts with over 40,000 attendees. Woodstock made it clear that concerts, music festivals and tours were going to be a big business.

In the ’70s lots of bands started to experiment with their live concerts by bringing special effects which focused on elements beyond the music. One of the pioneers of this, Pink Floyd, added light and laser performances to their concerts. They even had a large-scale model plane that flew over the audience and crashed onto the stage. The 1990s had two main changes for concerts. Firstly with the explosion in different types of genres came massive tours, with the biggest names in certain types of music coming together. Famous musicians started performing together. Secondly, new technologies had the opportunity to bring massive screens and special effects on tour with them.

After the year 2000, every big concert had special effects and with the new technologies, they had bigger screens and better lights. On April 29, 2006, Daft Punk revolutionized the future of concerts and live performances at the Sahara Tent at Coachella. The lights, visuals, and interactive set allowed viewers to experience the event in a unique way, setting a new standard for artists.
